River Road UMC: Capital Campaign Success
River Road United Methodist Church of Richmond, VA, recently concluded a successful capital campaign titled, “God’s House: Our Home”. In an interview, Pastor Darcey Johnson explained the benefits of working with the Development Company and the ministerial impact of its capital campaign.
What made River Road UMC decide to work with DevCo for their capital campaign needs?
”Knowing that we wanted some guidance as we began a Capital Campaign process, we looked to our UMC “in house” option first-the DevCo. Also, we had heard positive feedback from other church leaders and had a layperson currently serving on the Board who gave rave reviews as to the work of the DevCo.”
How did the DevCo team help you determine a capital campaign goal?
”Stephen and the team were very helpful in naming a process that was based upon both data and faith for the Capital Campaign. Beginning with a feasibility study, we explored the financial capacity of our church based upon past giving as well as how this Capital Campaign would help the church fulfill its mission. The process was rooted in a sense of mission and purpose for Christ and prayer.”
What have been the greatest benefits you’ve received from working with us?
”A clear process and support for reaching the goals we sense God has given to our church.”
What value did DevCo bring to you and other capital campaign committee members?
”A sense of how other churches had navigated Capital Campaigns and clear directions based on data and experience. “
How does the success of your capital campaign affect your congregation and River Road’s ministry?
”Our Capital Campaign was somewhat unique in that it addressed an immediate need (replacing the roof) with upgrades to worship spaces that help us to be more relevant to those whom we seek to reach. The fact that the entire pledge amount was reached within six months was a tremendous testimony to the hopefulness of the future of this congregation. The success of the Capital Campaign added fuel to our commitment that amidst a changing world we will remain steadfast to the gospel and flexible and creative in how we reach out with this good news.”
