Kindness is the New Evangelism

I read an article by Andrew Ponder Williams that was so powerful it made me think.  He says simple acts of kindness can counter the cultural narrative of meanness and it is a powerful way for the church to connect with others.  He says kindness is the new evangelism. He says, “So much of the narrative in our culture today can be summarized as just plain “mean.”  From the way customers behave at the corner restaurant to the dialogue of lawmakers on Capitol Hill, there is no shortage of people being nasty.”

As Christians we need to do more than act like those around us.  We need to model a different way!  Here are some examples of how we can change the culture.  Think about these and come up with your own.

  1. Your church probably hosts outside groups such as scouts, AA, and others. Pick a couple of weeks during the year and leave snacks or other things to brighten their day. This is a good way to leave literature about your church and events that are happening.
  2. Create a series of sermons on kindness. This will get church members and visitors to think about how they can treat others with kindness.
  3. Encourage your church to make “kindness” as part of their core.
  4. Offer acts of kindness in crisis. Open the church up for people to stay in an emergency.  Allow your church to be used as a thermal shelter. Invite the fire department or rescue squad over for a meal and thank them for their hours of service.
  5. Pass out cookies or other food at community events. Some churches have bottled water made with their name on the bottle.  This is a great way for people to know that you care.  Always make sure that your water, cookies, or other food is accompanied with a card inviting people to your worship services or other special events.

Andrew Ponder Williams has some good ideas.  I have shared some others.  What acts of kindness can you share?
